Mr.
Glenn Sumido, the chief of Staff of Department
of Education Secretary Jesli Lapuz is in Region
8 together with the officials of the Malaysian
Ministry of Education in order to observe the
Leyte APEX program of secondary education. |
Mr. Sumido’s visit is in line with the current
thrust of the Department in the improvement of
the system of education by incorporating technical
and vocational subjects in the secondary level
of education.
It would be recalled that Secretary Jesli Lapus
continues to push for the strengthening of the
department's Vocational Education Program. What
is being underscored is the importance of providing
the skills demanded by the market so that they
can be employed, regardless of whether or not
they finish a degree.

The
team visited the Tanauan National High School
in Tanauan, Leyte on July 10 where they were briefed
on the APEX Program which is being piloted in
that school by the Department of Education with
the help of the local government unit and the
Province of Leyte.
APEX stands for Applied Academics for Excellence.
In the province of Leyte, the strategic objective
is to develop students who are ready to pursue
higher education or an enterprise of choice in
case the student is unable to continue college
education.

In
short, the APEX Program is similar or exactly
what the Department of Education is striving
to address thru strengthening the tech-voc program,
the need to provide relevant foundation skills
for higher learning, employment or entrepreneurship
opportunities among the youth.
At the Tanauan National High School, the students
are being trained to become future entrepreneurs
so that they will become productive citizens
whether or not they are able to finish their
college education.

The
students are also trained to save P1.00 per
day which they give to the class treasurer and
then deposited at the bank. The money which
the students will be able to save, will already
serve as their capital to engage in an productive
endeavor after graduation in high school.
The visitors observed the academic classes in
Science and Math and the Business Enterprise
Skills and they were amazed that the students
are enjoying their classes which use the group
method of learning.
The visitors also observed that the students
wrap their shoes with an outer cover so that
their classrooms will not be soiled. Besides,
they are trained to put their wrappers and other
throw aways inside their pockets or in cellophane
which they put in their bags. As a result, the
school has been adjudged as a clean and green
school in the Division of Leyte.
