TANAUAN WELCOMES GERMAN AMBASSADOR,
SHOWCASES BARANGAY DEVELOPMENT PLANNING
Tanauan, Leyte (March 1) -- The local government of Tanauan, Leyte is all set to welcome His Excellency the German Ambassador to the Philippines on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, Tanauan Mayor Roque A. Tiu informed.
Mayor Tiu said that the LGU will showcase the land use based barangay development planning which is now being replicated in Barangays Atipolo, Calogcog and Solano. The LGU will also showcase the municipality's SMEs being assisted through the local regional economic development development (LRED).

Both projects are being implemented in partnership with the German Technical Cooperation popularly known as GTZ.
The Land-Use Based Development Planning is participatory because the plan is developed by the barangay residents themselves with the assistance of the Municipal Implementing Team.

The barangay people are able to identify not only the use of the land in their barangay but they are also able to determine the geohazards which are present in the barangay. Hence, they are able to plan ahead so that they will be able to mitigate if not fully prevent the damage of disasters.
Through this system of Development Planning, the barangays are able to determine which portion of the barangay is safe for residential locations and which parts are the best for productivity and what priority projects the barangay must undertake. The people will even know which lot to buy and what purpose the land is best used for. The best thing, however, is that through this kind of planning, the barangay people are empowered to plan for themselves and undertaking projects which the barangays will finance and with support from the other government entities, Mayor Tiu said.

On the LRED project, Mayor Tiu said the LGU will present to the German Ambassador, the show window of the municipality's Bambo Craft Producers Cooperative which was assisted by GTZ in terms of product development, cataloguing of products and posting the same in the internet.

The German Ambassador will be accompanied to Tanauan by the GTZ officials like Ms. Cecilia Quiocho-Astilla, adviser for the Environment and Rural Development Program. (PIA 8)
